Small businesses are usually privately held corporations, partnerships, or sole proprietorships.  The US small business administration classifies a small business as having less than 500 employees.  The US has over 18,000 such businesses which contribute more than half of the US gross domestic product and more than half of the nations jobs.  Small business contributes much but faces many uphill battles such as difficulties in obtaining financing, key man syndrome, and often a lack of professional business expertise.
